Alcohol Awareness Week and the Menopause

Menopause and alcohol similarities

As it was Alcohol Awareness Week last week Mindful Sips shared some of the links between alcohol and mental health.
We talked about physical brain changes, sleep, anxiety and low mood. If you missed any of it and are interested in finding out more we've put it all together in a this blog.

Mental health is a real concern for those going through peri menopause and beyond. We often feel like we're going mad! Symptoms like memory loss and brain fog convince us we must be loosing the plot and psychological symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, poor concentration and low self-esteem, primarily due to the depletion of the hormone oestrogen in the body, leave us wondering what life in all about at this point in time and they are often misdiagnosed as depression.

We often drink alcohol to take the edge off these feelings. We're tired and want to relax, it seems like an easy option. But when you read about how alcohol affects mental health you'll see the connection between many of these symptoms and alcohol.

So if we take a break from the booze or reduce our drinking, will our symptoms go away?  Unfortunately not! All women go through the menopause at some stage in their life. We can't stop the symptoms, but what we can do is help manage those symptoms for better mental and physical health and reducing our alcohol intake helps massively.

There are an abundance of alternatives to choose from as the market exploded with alcohol free drinks over the summer and through lockdown. You can see some of our recommendations on our Drinks page. Dry Drinker is one of my favourite places to go get my supplies. They have so much, you're really spoilt for choice.

If you're serious about managing your menopause symptoms it's definitely worth exploring your relationship with alcohol and looking at how you can reshape it!
